Reading Blog 2

I had the chance to read the article, “John Cage’s Art of Noise” by Alex Ross which discussed the video we watched in class depicting a man sitting at a piano for a while without saying playing a single note. However he considered it music due to the fact that there is no such thing as silence. According to the article, this conceptual work by John Cage is called “433” and is also referred to as a “Silent Piece” even though there is no such thing as silence. I found this article and contemporary piece to be really interesting in the sense that he opened many peoples eyes to the possibilities of music. The thing about music is that nothing is original and there is always something new to be discovered. One quote that stood out to me was, “Art is a sort of experimental station in which one tries out living”. Challenging the norms of society is a key element of art, and the fact that he knew the effect this piece would have on his audience started a contrever\sal conversation. This can be applied to modern society as well due to the fact that artists consider AI art to not be real or legitimate. My main take from this article is that the future is always unfolding and its important to challenge the norms we hold ourselves to. It seems important for artists to utilize up and coming tools and other people's work for inspiration. I don't see any other way for things to last, there is no such thing as originality today..
